So, you’re all prepared for your job interview but there’s one problem: Your will be interviewed via video. This is more common these days as candidates are more flexible and willing to move for the right job. Technology has made it possible for companies to interview candidates without flying them out, cutting back on cost and time. This also means that their pool for qualified candidates are slightly larger so it’s even more important for you to stand-out and show them why they should pick you over the candidate who doesn’t have to relocate.
Dress like you would for an in-person interview.
It’s tempting to wear a nice top over a pair of jeans since it’s not an in-person interview but your confidence level will be higher if you dress professionally for a video interview. Subconsciously, this will also impact your posture and overall attitude during the interview.
Test. 1-2-3.
As soon as you have confirmed the interview, test your equipment. Make sure that you have the proper software installed (it will probably be over Skype. On that note, make sure your Skype ID is also professional) and test your camera quality. This is your first impression on your potential employer. It’s hard to be impressed by someone who’s breaking in and out of the conversation.
Get your space ready for the interview.
The best place for the video interview is at your desk. Make sure that there isn’t anything offensive or distracting on the wall behind you and the area is clear of distractions. When it’s time for the interview, make sure your door is closed and there is no background noise. Make sure your laptop battery is charged, there are no updates scheduled and the lighting is adequate in your room.
No distractions!
It’s easy to be distracted by things that are happening in the background when you’re sitting in front of your computer. Turn off all notifications (especially sounds), put your phone on silent (but don’t put it away. Read on to find out why) and make sure that the video screen is maximized when it’s time for the interview. Do your preparation before, and print out anything that you may need to refer to, so that you aren’t clicking and opening web pages during the interview. Trust me, the temptation will be there.
Get comfortable 10 minutes before the interview.
You want to be relaxed and confident when that video goes live so be sure that you are ready at least 10 minutes prior to the start of the interview. The last thing you want is to begin the interview distracted. Spend that time to read over your notes on the the company, the position, and any questions that you want to ask at the end of the interview.
You may experience technical difficulties.
It happens. Best thing to do is not panic. During one of my video interviews for a job, there were issues with the video on the employer’s side of it so we had to do the interview over the phone. This is why it’s important to have your phone on silent but not put away, in case the interviewer may need to call you during the interview.
Just remember to breathe, smile and let your confidence shine.
